WEST ENCOUNTERS EAST
MIAMI, FLORIDA
Design and Branding for an Award-Winning PBS Documentary Series.
West Encounters East is an award-winning documentary film by Stella M. Holmes that explores the themes of immigration, alienation and assimilation through the lives and works of Japanese-Brazilian artists. Our role in the project began with the design of the film's branding, and extended to all of the collateral materials, DVD packaging, and advertising used to promote the film. We worked closely with the filmmaker and producer to define the visual language that best represented the spirit of the film, and to translate that spirit into a strong visual brand. During the shooting of the film, we designed a quarterly newsletter where the filmmaker documented her experiences on location and interviewed several of the artists featured in the film. The newsletter won the Best of Category Award at the 2015 Florida Print Awards. The film was screened at several international film festivals, and we designed the posters, media releases, invitations and advertisements needed to promote each showing. The documentary aired on more than 280 public television stations across the country, and was released on DVD several months later. We designed the DVD packaging and accompanying promotional graphics, and worked closely with the manufacturer to produce the final product. Today, our relationship with the filmmaker continues as she explores more stories from around the world in which West Encounters East.
