Aventura Mall is one of the nation's largest super regional lifestyle centers. When Turnberry Associates embarked on a massive renovation of their signature property, they turned to yazi to plan and design a new comprehensive interior and exterior wayfinding program to support the mall’s new look. Working closely with the ownership, we reviewed their redevelopment plans and details, and proposed a new interior and exterior wayfinding strategy that would support their vision for the renovated property.
THE MASTER PLAN
Aventura Mall, developed and operated by Turnberry Associates, is an upscale super regional shopping center and a prominent destination for both locals and visitors to South Florida. Opened in 1983, it is the largest conventional mall in Florida, and the third largest mall in the country. Our goal was not just to redesign and replace the existing signs, but to dramatically improve the overall wayfinding and customer experience. With a gross retail area of 2.7 million square feet and almost 10,000 parking spaces, it was critical for us to design a program that would effortlessly guide visitors to anchor tenants, valet parking, parking garages, and mall entrances and exits. We analyzed traffic and pedestrian flow, and developed both interior and exterior route diagrams highlighting travel pathways and decision points. We created detailed sign location plans and sign message schedules that formed the structure for the new program, while closely coordinating the proposed signage with both the Owners and the City of Aventura. We collaborated with City officials to create design solutions that not only served our client’s needs, but also established a new standard of design and presentation for multi-tenant signage within the City.
A NEW VISION
The new mall interiors and finishes are a blend of contemporary forms and elegant materials. It was important for our designs to seamlessly support the revised interiors, and contribute to establishing the updated brand and sense of place. Our color palette and material specifications were carefully selected to compliment the new architectural finishes. Improved symbols are incorporated into the program to assist the mall’s many international visitors. The result is a system of signs that elegantly and efficiently provides information and direction to visitors, and feels like a natural extension of the mall’s visual vocabulary. Building upon the success of the new system, we continue to work with the Owner to design signage for new programs, property renovations and additions.
