Environmental Graphics | Wayfinding
Client: City of Miami Beach, Florida
Completion Date: 2006
From 2000-2006, yazi worked with the City of Miami Beach on several projects aimed at improving wayfinding in the City’s public parks. Our scope of work included planning, designing, and creating uniform standards for typical wayfinding signs that could be implemented throughout all City parks, as well as the design of new identity signage for several existing parks.
A UNIFIED EFFORT
Working with team of architects, planners, and landscape architects, we evaluated the existing wayfinding in several key parks within the City to identify needs and opportunities. We also reviewed plans for several active park renovations that were underway at the time. Based on our observations and the data that we collected, as well as input from the City, we developed a new program of branded wayfinding standards to be implemented over time in all City parks. Our designs supported the current City branding, were cost effective, maintainable, and designed to create a cohesive sense of place amongst all City parks.
MONUMENTAL IDEAS
Our standards also included designs for monumental identity signs for specific individual parks. Because of the unique character and history of many of the City parks, a singular approach to park identity signage was not going to work. Instead we proposed a palette of techniques that offered a level of uniformity, while still allowing for design and application flexiblity due to the unique circumstances of individual parks.
Pine Tree Park and North Shore Open Space Park are two examples of monument identity signs yazi designed that support our new specifications. We also designed new monument identity signs for Lummus Park, which fronts Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive and the world famous art deco district. The historic, cultural, and iconic nature of this park demanded a special approach to designing new identity signage. Working closely with the City’s historical preservation board we proposed a pair of mirrored stainless steel monoliths that would reflect their tropical surroundings as well as the art deco architecture and night life across the street.
