Client: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Key Largo, Florida
Completion Date: 2025
Established in 1963, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo is approximately 70 nautical square miles of ocean and coastline and contains one of the only living coral reefs in the continental United States. By annual visitor count, the Park is the most popular State Park in Florida. In 2024, Yazi was part of a team tasked with planning and designing a comprehensive renovation to the Park’s grounds and public facilities. Our task was to evaluate the existing wayfinding in the Park, and create specifications for updated orientation and directional signage to support the Park renovations.
LAYING THE GROUNDWORK
Our first step in the process was to evaluate the existing conditions onsite. We reviewed the current directional and informational systems in place, and noted deficiencies and areas of opportunity in the existing sign program. Both the primary roadways and main parking area will be significantly modified as part of the renovations. A new visitors center and renovated grounds will change pedestrian flow and circulation. We noted an absence of effective pedestrian orientation and directional signage to the many different venues and attractions onsite. Based on our reviews of the current site conditions, and the proposed renovations, we created sign location plans and message schedules for proposed new pedestrian and vehicular signage.
SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND
The Florida State Park system has a specific sign criteria that must be implemented in all State Parks. Working within these standards, we designed a new signage and wayfinding system that supports and advances the updates and renovations to the Park. The specifications include the design and placement of new vehicular and pedestrian signs, that will integrate with the Park renovations, and improve visitor orientation and navigation. We made significant improvements to the pedestrian signage, adding orientation signage in key locations, and adding symbols to pedestrian messaging to improve understanding for the many foreign visitors that the Park receives each year.
